My Top 3 Vegan Skincare Picks for November

Chantecaille’s Just Skin Tinted Moisturizer

Even though this gem is one of my more recent discoveries, it has easily become one of the top three foundations I have ever used!

So, what’s the skinny on Just Skin? It’s lightweight, moisturizing without feeling greasy and contains SPF 15 to help protect you from harmful UVA and UVB rays. I’ve been looking for a good foundation+moisturizer that can rebuff the cool San Francisco climate and provides protection from the sun (San Francisco’s clouds are misleading; the sun’s harmful rays penetrate through the clouds and fog so us San Franciscans still need ample UV protection).

If you’re looking for a medium to full coverage foundation…honey I’m sorry to say, this ain’t it. It smoothes and evens out my skin but only gives me light to medium foundation coverage. However, the sweet point for this particular skincare product is how moisturizing, lightweight and velvety it feels on my skin. It’s price point is a little steep but I’m six months into using the same tube and I STILL have a little less than half of the original product left (I apply 1-2 layers a day with a wet Beauty Blender). Highly recommend this skin-tastic moisturizer!

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial Exfoliator and Facial Cleanser

The Babyfacial™ is one of the most effective skincare products I have ever used. I had already been a fan of Drunk Elephant because its products are 100% free of the Suspicious 6 (drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances/dyes, SLS and essential oils).

THE FIRST TIME I USED BABYFACIAL, I SAW IMMEDIATE RESULTS.

I had been searching in vain for products that would help reduce the inflammation on my chin (to this day, I get mixed opinions from dermatologists with what the small lesions on my chin are) and this mask delivered on its promise to resurface my skin and give it more radiance. I noticed a huge improvement in my chin area as well as my complexion looking brighter and my acne scars diminishing as well!

Their philosophy focuses more on biocompatibility than verifying the “natural” status of its ingredients, which I respect. Their approach to skincare is to give your skin “a clean break” by eliminating the Suspicious 6 from your skincare routine.

My purchase also came with a sample size of the Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil (which you can apply after removing the Babyfacial treatment for moisturization.) I apply the mask only once a week due to its high efficacy and leave on for twenty minutes. For the best results, I follow up the mask with a facial oil or moisturizer. A little product goes a long way with this one!

Whish Beauty Restoring Face Oil

2019 is the year of bakuchiol (pronounced buh-koo-chee-all), the vegan alternative to retinol that is blowing up the skincare world!

As someone with extremely sensitive skin, I have to exercise caution when using retinoids and retinols (both are Vitamin A derivatives that are ultimately converted into retinoic acids). Retinoids (the umbrella term for over-the-counter retinols and prescription retinoids) are clinically proven to treat acne and reduce the appearance of wrinkles; retinoic acid is also one of the holy grail ingredients in anti-aging skincare products.

So what exactly makes bakuchiol different from retinol? Bakuchiol is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It’s derived from seeds and leaves of the babchi plant, psoralea corylifolia. Bakuchiol increases cell turnover, thereby stimulating collagen production, repairing skin damage and revealing fresh skin cells.

Whish Beauty Restoring Face Oil is definitely one of my favorite bakuchiol products to date; when I began researching bakuchiol, it was always being touted as one of the best selling bakuchiol products currently out on the market. I love how it’s moisturizing without leaving behind a greasy residue and making me look like you could fry eggs on my face. After applying a single, thin layer (which is really all you need), my skin feels more hydrated and has a nice glow to it! An added bonus is the dropper it comes with, making it easier to measure out how many drops you want to use independently or for mixing with other skincare products.

Get Out of a Hair-y Situation

Drybar The Brush Crush Heated Straightening Brush

Alright, I’m going to cut to the chase. This is a home run for Dry Bar. Not only is it a great blow dry bar franchise but they also have their own line of styling tools and products (service fees vary according to location but typically it’s $49 for a blowout and $25 for dry styling). They just released their latest heat styling tool, which is what I’m about to dive into below!

So typically I wear my hair two ways – either it’s in my “on-the-go” bun or down entirely. However, once or twice a month I like to pamper myself and get a blowout at one of my fave local spots Dry Bar (Pacific Heights). That is where I found out about The Brush Crush and let me tell ya Friends…it BLEW ME AWAY. LITERALLY.

I have thick and coarse hair that falls below my shoulders; its not difficult to straighten but when its been in a bun for the past two days, there tend to be more kinks and knots in it…meaning more swipes with the straightener are needed. I had been using my same beloved Chi of five years and it’s always taken 4-5 rounds of swipes to straighten it. So, how long does it take with The Brush Crush, do you ask?

CHI: 30 minutes VS– Brush Crush: 4 minutes

Watch The Brush Crush straighten my hair in under FOUR minutes!

It took LESS THAN FOUR MINUTES using The Brush Crush. My hair wasn’t pin straight or perfect sleek but it still looked fabulous, as if I had just walked out of the salon! The Brush’s ionic technology and paddle Brush form seals the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and increasing shine! This brush is AMAZING. Also, it has a 60 minute safety shut-off which is an important safety function I always look for when purchasing any heat styling tool.

I also purchased the Drybar Hot Toddy Heat Protectant Mist with The Brush Crush (note: its extremely important to use a thermal protectant shield on your hair prior to putting any heat on your hair; the Hot Toddy also provides an added bonus of UV protection). Without a barrier between your hair and that 350-450 degree heat, you’re basically resigning your hair to a dry, dull future. A thermal protectant will help reduce the amount of thermal stress on your hair!

FINAL SAY 4/5 stars With The Brush Crush, I can straighten and brush my hair at the same time, thereby cutting my styling time in half! That’s great news for anyone who is always on a time crunch and simply doesn’t have the time to spend half an hour on straightening their hair. With The Brush Crush my hair looks shiny and frizz free after straightening! This is one tool that is a bit pricey but in my opinion, it’s DEFINITELY worth the investment.

Spice Up Your Skin with Some Turmeric

Kora Turmeric 2-in-1 Brightening & Exfoliating Mask

I. Am. OBSESSED. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard that Miranda Kerr had developed her own organic skincare line. With today’s saturated skincare industry, I’m sure the pressure is on when competing toe-to-toe with today’s popular skincare brands offering vegan products such as Drunk Elephant, Youth to the People, La Mer, etc. but I’ve gotta hand it to Kora’s marketing team; walking down the aisle at Sephora, the Kora shelves immediately caught my eye. I was already searching for a granular exfoliating face mask and when I saw that Kora had one with the popular anti-inflammatory ingredient turmeric, I figured why not give this mask a shot?

WHY I LOVE IT Turmeric. Its main ingredient is turmeric. What is it about turmeric that makes it so dang awesome? Its active ingredient, curcumin, has powerful biologic properties. Turmeric is best known as a spice (known as Indian saffron or golden spice), used to make capsules, powders, dyes and extracts – but did you know it is also traditionally a pillar in Ayurvedic Medicine (a holistic approach to health originating from India over 3000 years ago)? To this day, turmeric is still being used to holistically treat chronic pain due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

APPLICATION The product comes in a plastic tube (3.5 oz/100 mL) and is pretty easy to dispense. I use a mask applicator instead of my fingers to apply this particular mask because the product can get a little messy (admittedly, the color isn’t the most appealing…its a poop green. Best way I can describe it). Using the mask applicator I apply an even, thin layer on my face and leave it on for 5-10 minutes (forewarning: it dries like hard mud so don’t cake it on; otherwise, it will take longer to remove). Then I use my fingers to gently massage the mask off in a circular motion, moving downwards.

FINAL SAY 4/5 STARS A mask worthy of repurchasing! I used it 1-2 times a week and am JUST finishing the last bit of it three months later…so even though this mask is a little pricey, its effectiveness and how much product you get in one tube validates the price point for me!
